I will admit I freaked myself out last night and this morning over this Virtual Race. I was as or more nervous than I would be for a real race. Why?? I set some lofty goals for myself.
I decided I would take this opportunity to try and run a fast 5k on the treadmill and I knew it would not be easy. I have a tough time running 3 miles in 24 minutes on my treadmill, but i can do it with ease outside. I don't know if it is the heat in the room, or my stride is different, I do love the treadmill though because I always feel like I kicked my own booty afterwards.
My fear inducing goal was to PR (not including HS/ College times) on the treadmill this morning. I wanted to get 21:30 or below. Part of me said "just set it to 8.7 (6:54) and don't stop" and another part of me said "helll noo." But it was in my head so I was going for it.
One big difference, for me between, the road and the treadmill, is that you can slow down a little and then pick it up according to how you feel on the road, this is harder to do on the treddy.
My biggest fear with going for this time wasn't not achieving the time, it was that I wouldn't be able to finish the whole 5k if I killed myself in the first 1 1/2 miles.
Anyway on to the actual race:
Geared Up!
The view from my treadmill
(I didn't run with the bib on because for some reason I felt it would annoy me on the treadmill even though I never have a problem with them on the road?) Ohh and I picked #1959 because that is my goal time for 2011!!
I warmed up for 5 mins at 3.0-6.0 pace and then it was on!! I started at 8.5 (7:04) and kept it there for a mile. I had added some new songs to my playlist and had it blasting :D A little after mile one all hell broke loose (at least in my eyes). I realized I was not going to be able to keep this consistent pace for 2 more miles on the treadmill and took a little 6.0 breather.
My difficulty was not that my legs were tired or that I was out of breath, It was just that gut busting feeling that I always get in races. I am still learning to deal with it and power through. Once I learn that yes, my stomach is going to feel like it's about to explode and tough you'll just have to get over, it's only about 15 min. that you have to suffer, I'll be on fire!!
From mile 1.2 on, I varied the pace just trying to balance it out to a sub 22. At times I went at 9.2-9.4 and I finished the last .2 in 9.4 as well. I don't even remember what my 2 mile was I was just trying to get it done!
Final Time: 21:55
I didn't beat my Turkey Trot time of 21:52, and obviously I didn't break 21:30, but for a treadmill 5k, I'LL TAKE IT :)
It wouldn't show me the time (or at least I couldn't figure out how to show it).
This was the best I could get
Some after pics:
Looking like I got beat up by my treadmill
Celebrating the fact that I'm finished!
Some Race Tunes:
"Candle (Sick and Tired)" - White Tie Affair (Both the original and the Razor and Guido Radio Edit)
"Hell of A Life"- Kanye West (This song is a little hard and dirty, not recommended for everyone, but I have listened to it for everything thing the past few days stairs, spinning, push-ups and RACING!)
Thanks Adam for putting this together, can't wait to read everyone else's recaps :D
